I bought this book on one of those occasions when I was feeling like I should read something sophisticated, intelligent, literary and possibly foreign. I also bought it because I wanted to see how a writer had used a vegetarian, and the concept of vegetarianism as the central theme of the book. Being a vegetarian/vegan I had a natural interest.
Han King has woven a complex and irresistibly seductive tale here. The pace and feel of this story is excellent. The characters are so lightly stated, yet so intimately realised that you can’t help but engage with them.
The basic premise of the vegetarian going crazy and that her vegetarianism was the first indication of her fraying mental state, made me wince. Maybe vegetarianism in South Korea where Kang is from is seen as a bit odd. But in any case, a great read and recommended. Just don’t let it get under your skin too much if you are in fact a vegetarian.
